The Word

If you teach me a word
                 It becomes mine.
When you teach me that word
It becomes a part of who I am.
When I have mastered the word
No one can ever steal it away.

I wrote these three lines many years ago when I was teaching middle school, I guess. I don’t remember writing this, nor do I have any idea what lead me to write it. I’m not even sure what it means . Possibly I was psyching myself out to teach a vocabulary lesson. I am pretty sure it had something to do with my teaching. I found this scribbling among some old school papers that I haven’t seen for maybe twenty years. I decided to add to what I wrote two decades ago and try to make something of it.

If you teach me a word
                 It becomes mine.
When you teach me a word
It becomes a part of who I am.
When I have mastered the word
No one can ever steal it away…

But when I die this word dies with me
It will be gone and no one will care.

If you teach me the Word
The Word will live in me.
When the Word is alive in me
I become more and more like the Word.
When the Word becomes my Master
I know that I am no longer my own.
If I belong to the eternal Word
Nothing nor no one can steal me away!
I, living in the Word, the Word, living in me
Forever I live, one with the Word, the Spirit and the Father.
